Abstract

886,198. Jet deflectors. SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. May 26, 1959 [June 5, 1958], No. 17950/59. Class 4. The discharge nozzle 1 of a gas turbine propulsion unit on aircraft is extended rearwardly by a sleeve 2 which acts as an ejector for mixing ambient air with the propulsive jet, the sleeve 2 being surrounded by gas deflecting guide vanes 3. Blades 4, 5, 6 and 7, faired in cross-section, are mounted for pivoting movement about their respective axes in T-shape fittings 12 under the control of linkwork and a screw jack (not shown). The fittings 12 are mounted on axes tangential of the jet pipe for fore-and-aft pivoting movement under the control of racks 10 which engage toothed sectors formed on fittings 12, the racks being operated also by a screw jack. In normal thrust conditions the blades 4-7 are positioned clear of the jet in the positions shown in full line in the upper half of the figures, whereas to deflect the jet the jack controlling the rack 10 is operated to swing the blades forwardly and inwardly to the chain-dotted positions with their chords parallel with the jet stream. The other jack is then operated to swing the blades about their respective axes until they occupy the transverse positions shown in full line in the lower half of the figures. Specifications 751,316 and 751,317 are referred to.
