Abstract

871,274. Jet propulsion nozzles. SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. Nov. 6, 1959 [Nov. 12, 1958], No. 37721/59. Class 110 (3). A jet propulsion nozzle comprises two independent groups of pivoted flaps having separate controls; on the one hand an upstream group pivoted at their upstream ends and forming a convergent portion and on the other hand, a downstream group pivoted at their downstream ends and forming a divergent portion of the nozzle and also capable of being retracted laterally so as to leave only the upstream flaps operative. The jet propulsion nozzle comprises a group of upstream flaps 1 pivoted at 2 to the jet pipe 3 and a group of downstream flaps 4 pivoted at 5 to the upstream end of a fixed divergent portion 19. The flaps 1 have free downstream ends and the flaps 4 free upstream ends. The flaps form a convergent-divergent nozzle. A channel 8 for the aspiration of air by ejector effect may be provided. The flaps 1 are actuated.by axial movement of a ring 10 and the flaps 4 by axial movement of a ring 13. The rings 10, 13 are operated by jacks independently controlled. The ring 10 is controlled by means based substantially on engine rotation speed and the ring 13 by means responsive to, for example, Mach number, the pressure upstream of the discharge nozzle or the external pressure.
