Abstract

808,608. Jet propelled aircraft. SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. May 9, 1957 [May 11, 1956], No. 14803/57. Class 4. [Also in Group XXVI] A jet propulsion nozzle ending in a circular outlet comprises an outwardly convex curved annular surface having a minimum diameter greater than that of the outlet and extending around the outlet in radially spaced relation to form an annular gap facing upstream and downstream, and flaps pivoted on the nozzle and movable through the gap between a retracted position outside the nozzle and jet stream and an operative position lying across part of the jet stream. In Fig. 4, the annular surface is in two parts 2a, 2b, the former fixed and the latter attached to a grid of blades 3 and movable between inoperative (upper part of Fig. 4) and operative (lower part of Fig. 4) positions. The movable members are each in two parts 6a and 6<SP>1</SP>a, and 6b and 6<SP>1</SP>b. The upper part of Fig. 4 shows the nozzle in normal operation, members 6a, 6<SP>1</SP>a being retracted into the gap 5. For deflection, members 6<SP>1</SP>a and 6<SP>1</SP>b remain retracted and members 6a, 6b are moved to a central abutting position as shown for member 6b, and the jet is deflected into the grid of blades. To vary the nozzle area, the members are operated in the manner of eyelids, either equally or to different extents to give a deflection of the jet. Ambient air is drawn in through the gap 5 by the jet, and serves to detach the jet from the guide surface 2a, 2b, when deflection is not required. Alternatively, Fig. 5 (not shown), the guide surface may be in one part, fixed with the grid of blades to the nozzle, and the exterior fairing of the nozzle may be movable axially to cover or expose the grid of blades.
