Abstract
1,115,228. Air cushion vehicles. AEROPHYSICS CO. 14 Dec., 1965 [29 Dec., 1964], No. 53052/65. Heading B7K. An air cushion vehicle has a body 20 formed by outer wall 2], depending skirt 22 and a profiled rim 25 which forms an air intake to a radial flow fan 30 carried by bearing 29 and a further bearing 41 in a disc 40 at the base of the body. The fan blades 35 are enclosed by sideplates 37, 38 which form a peripheral divergent nozzle, the upper plate 37 extending upwardly into an annular groove 36<SP>1</SP> in the rim 25. The disc 40 is so profiled, as at 43, that the annular air duct P between the fan nozzle and an air discharge nozzle 42 from which an air curtain is discharged is, within the plan-form limits of any sector, of constant, circumferential, cross-sectional area in vertical planes. The nozzle 42 is provided with air-flow control vanes 50 and in a further embodiment (Fig. 9, not shown) such vanes extend upwardly into the annular duct P. The vehicle may be circular or elliptical in plan shape and it may have a downwardly extending flexible skirt. A vehicle is described (Figs. 6, 7, not shown) which is supported by a plurality of air cushion units having the features described above.
