Abstract

1485004 Stabilizing earth; retaining walls ENVIRONMENT SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 6 Sept 1974 [7 Dec 1973] 56913/73 Headings E1F and E1H A reinforced earth structure has backfill stabilising members 50 A-C mounted on poles 20 A-C by holes 52 or by hook arrangements so as to be vertically movable relative to the poles in the event of settlement of the backfill. Hexagonal facing members 30 are mounted on the poles 20 A-C by holes 36 provided in upper and lower flanges 32 and are attached to one another to form a continuous face by bolts 62 passing through holes 38 in flanges 34. The stabilising members 50 A-C and the facing members 30 are preferably made from stainless steel or glass reinforced cement. A plastics sealing strip 60 is placed between the flanges of adjacent facing members, the flanges being slightly divergent, so as to prevent egress of backfill material between the facing members. The poles 20 A-C may be metal rods or hollow plastics tubes, the latter having sockets 22 for spigots 24 of further poles. Reinforcement rods 26 may be positioned within the hollow tubes 20 A-C and are secured in place by grout. The bottom of poles 20 A-C and facing members 30 may be secured in a cement filled trench. A wall or embankment having two opposite lateral sides may be formed.
