Abstract
1482162 Acicular γ-ferric oxide BASF AG 18 Oct 1974 [19 Oct 1973] 45184/74 Heading C1A Acicular γ-ferric oxide of high coercivity is prepared by heating gaethite or acicular α- ferric oxide at a temperature of 500-800‹ C., and reducing the product to magnetite at 280-600‹ C., heating the magnetite at 400- 600‹ C. in an inert gas atmosphere, preferably nitrogen, followed by oxidation of the treated magnetite preferably at 200-400‹ C. in oxygen. The goethite may be modified with 0À5-25% by weight of cobalt based on the ferric oxide and the product is suitable for use in magnetic recording media.
