Abstract

148,096. Mars, W. J. Dec. 20, 1919. Generating by diract contact of combustion products.-In a generator comprising a closed chamber, a water-spraying nozzle at one end of the chamber, one or more burners at the other end, and an annular partition between the nozzle and the burner, the nozzle is so formed as to produce a whirling spray directed towards the annular partition. Water is sprayed from the nozzle 12, Fig. 3, through radial apertures 19 and is deflected tangentially by plates 21, Fig. 6, secured over the apertures. The end of the nozzle is closed by a fusible plug 18. Fuel is supplied to the burnernozzle 24 by a jet 39 having a fine spraying aperture 41. The fuel is vaporized in a coil 32. Air is supplied to the mixing-chamber 23 at the outer end of the burner nozzle through a pipe 26 connected to an air bottle or reservoir having a spring- controlled pressure regulator. The fuel and water are supplied from reservoirs maintained under constant pressure by loaded plungers. When a number of burners is used, they are so inclined to one another that the flames meet at a point in the line of the axis of the water jet. The ignition aperture on the side of chamber is closed by a screw-threaded plug 43, Fig. 5, engaging in a hinged U-shaped cross-bar 45. An electric ignition device is fitted on the opposite side of the chamber. Instead of liquid fuel, acetylene or other gaseous fuel may be used, the vaporizing-coil being dispensed with.
