Abstract

Braking.-The steering or other wheels of a two or four-wheeled vehicle are mounted on stub axles which can be deflected to make the wheels .converge to produce a braking effect. For this purpose the stub axles are provided with arms connected by a crossed link, or the connecting-link may be variable in length. In the form shown in Fig. 2, non-steering wheels are mounted on stub axles T having oppositely-directed arms L connected by a cross link 3. Normally, the axles T are in the same vertical plane and are deflected as shown by a brake lever connected by a link 4 with an extension L<2> of one of the arm L. The link 3 may be in two independent parts connected to a separate operating-lever. In the form shown in Fig. 13 as applied to steering-wheels, the connexion between the arms L is in the form of a right and left handed screwed rod engaging internally screwed sockets pivoted to the arms L; the rod can be rotated to lengthen or shorten the connexion by means of a worm wheel thereon engaging a hand-operated worm. The rod &c. is enclosed in a casing supported by loosely pivoted members L<4>, one of which is provided with an extension L<5> which is operated for steering. In the form shown in Fig. 11, the members L are connected with telescoping members 33 fitting into the hollow steering connexion 3. The members 33 are connected by links 22 to a three-armed lever L<3> in the operation of which the members are moved outwards from the member 3.
