Abstract

1478533 Carbonitride alloys TELEDYNE INDUSTRIES Inc. 12 June 1974 [18 June 1973 29 May 1974] 26180/74 Headings C7A and C7D Sintered composition has a carbonitride hard phase of the formula,(M<SP>1</SP> x M y ) (C u N v ) z wherein M<SP>1</SP> is Ti a<SP>1</SP> (Hf r Nb s Ta c )b<SP>1</SP>, M is Wa Mob, b<SP>1</SP> # a<SP>1</SP>, b # a, r + s + t = 1, y = 0À4-0À85, x+y= 1, v = 0À005-0À18, u + v = 1, z = 0À9-1 and b<SP>1</SP> and b may be equal to 0, falling within the area ABCD of Fig. 1, in 3-20% of a binder of the iron group metals, with Fe no more than 15% of the binder. The carbonitride has a two phase microstructure comprising a core of M<SP>1</SP> and nitrogen rich solid solution surrounded by a phase rich in M but poor in nitrogen. Up to 10 atomic per cent of metal M<SP>1</SP> may be replaced by V and up to 8 atomic per cent of the metal M may be replaced by Cr. The binder may contain small alloying additions of refractory metals such as Mo and W. The composition may be made by reacting metal and carbide mixtures with nitrogen bearing gas at 1400-1800‹C, adding WC + other required carbides + binder metal(s), milling, compacting and sintering. Alternatively carbide/nitride mixtures may be homogenized at 1700-2100‹C under nitrogen to provide the hard phase for further processing as above. The composition may be used for making tools.
