Abstract
1477096 Electrode arrangement in lead-acid cell TUDOR A B 4 Sept 1975 36468/75 Heading H1B A lead-acid cell comprises a casing, a liquid electrolyte therein, spaced first and second plate connecting straps 4, 6, disposed substantially vertically in said casing and extending into said electrolyte, and vertically spaced positive and negative flat plate electrodes 5a, 5b, including active material and rigid material serving as its support, with the electrodes being supported alternately on said first and second connecting straps in vertically spaced parallel relationship at a small acute angle to the horizontal, which angle is sufficient to permit bubbles formed in the elctrolyte during operation of the cell to escape. The lowest electrode may be mounted on energy absorbing wedge 11, e.g. of rubber, optionally coated with glass-fibre reinforced polyester; further non-conducting supports 12 may be provided at the free ends of the electrodes, and the electrode stack may be subjected via 15 and 16 to compressive stress using nuts and bolts 17 and 18 as shown. The arrangement is applicable particularly to tall cells, of height 3 times or more than their greatest width, and a battery may be made up by connecting adjacent cells using connections through the cell walls (Figs. 2, 4, and 5, not shown); the conductive straps 4, 6, may be of Cu of Al coated with Pb.
