Abstract

1476383 Esters of dimer and trimer acids ROHM & HAAS CO 26 April 1974 [2 May 1973] 50806/76 Divided out of 1476381 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] An ester or mixture of esters of a dimer or trimer or mixture of dimers and trimers of an unsaturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid of 16-18 C atoms with (a) an aliphatic alcohol of 1-24 C atoms and (b) an alkoxylated alkyl phenol is claimed. The ester or mixture of esters may have the formula where Z 1 is the hydrocarbon residue of the dimer or trimer and, n has a value in the case of a single compound or average value in the case of a mixture of compounds in the range 1-20, p and q are each 1 or 2, the sum of p and q being 2 when Z 1 is the residue of a dimer acid and 3 when Z 1 is the residue of a trimer acid, R 7 is C 4 -C 12 alkyl, R 8 is H or C 4 -C 12 alkyl and R 9 is C 1 -C 24 alkyl. The ester or mixture of esters may be prepared by reacting a mixture of an aliphatic alcohol and an alkoxylated alkyl phenol with the dimer and/or trimer of the unsaturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid. The ester or mixture thereof may be used in liquid hydrocarbon motor fuels.
