Abstract

1475604 Gasket profiles; sealing containers W R GRACE & CO 19 May 1975 [28 May 1974 2 July 1974] 23611/74 and 29297/74 Heading B8T A gasketed metal cap blank 1 comprises a gasket having a flat central panel 4 occupying from 50 to 94% of the internal diameter of the cap blank and an adjoining peripheral portion 2 occupying the remainder of the diameter, the configuration of the peripheral portion being as follows: (i) a part AB making an angle # with the plane of the central panel of from 25 to 90 degrees and having a medial length of from 5 to 30% the radial length AW; (ii) an adjoining step part 13C of constant gradient making an angle α with the plane of the central panel of from 0 to 25 degrees and having a radial length of from 10 to 70% the radial length AW; (iii) an adjoining corner part CD, the height of which DX above the plane of the step part is from 20 to 65% of the distance DY; (iv) an adjoining marginal part DE extending either as a flat step or upwardly towards the skirt and having a radial length of from 2 to 15% of the radial length AW. The cap blank 1 is placed over the threaded neck of a container, the diameter of the skirt above the threads on the container neck is reduced and threads are formed in the skirt. At least a part of the flat area of the rim of a bottle neck is pressed against at least part of the step part BC. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 the part AB may have either a planar or convex slope; the step part BC may be flat or have a slight upward slope; the corner part CD may have a convex, concave, or planar slope; and the marginal part DE, which is the radial tolerance of the moulding operation of the gasket, may slope upwards or be flat. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 the radial length of the step part BC is at least 10 but less than 30% of the length AW, the ratio of the radial length of the corner part to the step part is from 0À8 : 1 to 1À7 : 1 and the height DX is from 55 to 65% of the height DY. The cap blank may be placed on a "pilferproof" neck, in this case a cap with a long skirt is used for engaging over the locking bead of the container neck. A narrow, easily fracturable, band is provided in the skirt. The gasket material may be a mixture comprising polyethylene, butyl rubber and optionally an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer with or without a slip additive. Mixtures containing 40-70% by weight of polyethylene and 60-30% of butyl rubber are suitable.
