Abstract

Surfaces are sensitised, for the purpose of applying a strongly adhesive metal layer from a bath depositing metal in an electroless manner, by treatment with an activable copper complex in a liquid medium. This complex is produced on the surface from a solution which contains a mixture of halogen ions, copper in two oxidation states, hydrogen ions and a polar solvent. The complex is converted on the surface into an insoluble compound and is then converted into a catalytically active form, e.g. by treatment with a reductant or with water.
