Abstract
1474222 Casting composite articles KLOCKNER-WERKE AG 10 June 1974 [30 June 1973] 49138/76 Divided out of 1474221 Heading B3F A process for the manufacture of clad blocks or slabs comprises arranging an annular claddng plate 11 in a casting mould 1 with the axis of the plate extending in a generally vertical direction and with a clearance between the lower axial end face of the cladding plate and the adjacent bottom of the mould, and subsequently pouring molten base material into the mould so as to fill the clearance, to fill the space enclosed by the annular cladding plate and to submerge the upper axial end face of the plate. During subsequent solidification and cooling, a gap (6, Fig. 1, not shown) forms between the cladding plate and base material but the engagement of the base material with the ends 5, which may be chamfered, of the plate form seals to prevent oxidation in the gap so that during subsequent rolling of the block or slab the plate becomes bonded to the base material.
