Abstract

1474221 Casting composite articles KLOCKNER-WERKE AG 10 June 1974 [30 June 1973] 25633/74 Heading B3F A process for the manufacture of partially clad blocks or slabs comprises arranging cladding plates 2 in a casting mould 1 close to the interior of the mould wall and with a clearance between the edge faces 5 of each plate and adjacent parts of the interior wall of the mould, and subsequently pouring molten base material 3 into the mould. The cladding material may have corrosion-resistant and/or wear-resistant properties. During solidification and cooling, the base material contracts over the edge faces 5 to effect sealing to prevent the penetration of oxidising gases into the gaps which form between the base material and cladding plates and which would prevent bonding therebetween during subsequent rolling operations. In addition, the surfaces may be protected from oxidation by a protective coating. Thermally insulating layers 7, such as asbestos sheets, may be disposed between the cladding plates and the mould wall. The edges 5 of the plates may be normal to the plates or chamfered. Metal strips, which may be of the same material as the cladding plates or the base material, may be fitted to the plates and partially dissolve in the molten base material during casting to prevent a gap forming at the edges 5. The strips may have recesses or perforations (10, Fig. 4, not shown). The cladding plates may be provided on one, two or all four sides of the mould.
