Abstract
1470723 Complex basic zirconium and aluminium salts BASF AG 13 May 1975 [30 May 1974] 20061/75 Heading C2C [Also in Division C6] Water-soluble complex salts of the formula wherein R is a C 1-4 monocarboxylic acid radical, X is Cl or HSO 4 <SP>-</SP>, a and b are independently from 1 to 9, c is from 0 to ((4a+3b)-0À333 (a+b)) and d is from 0À333(a+b) to ((4a+3b)- 0À333(a+b)), provided that c+d is from 0À333 (a + b) to (4a+3b), f is (4a+3b)-(c+d), and e is 2a, may be prepared by mixing appropriate starting materials in amounts which fall within the limits implied by the above empirical formula and by adjusting the dilution of the mixture so that the components are not precipitated out. The starting material for the zirconium constituent may be a zirconyl sulphonic acid which, optionally, may be reacted with an alkali metal salt of an organic acid or with various alkaline reagents to give complex basic acido-sulphato-zirconium salts. Suitable starting materials for providing the aluminium constitutent are aluminium chloride or sulphate, alum and their reaction products with alkali metal salts of organic acids or other alkaline reagents. Suitable monocarboxylic acid radicals may be derived from optionally substituted saturated or unsaturated acids such as formic, acetic, propionic, lactic, acrylic or methacrylic. The products may be used in the tanning of hides and skins.
