Abstract

Solid tanning agents are made by homogeneously mixing a melted salted out condensation product of a dihydroxy diaryl sulphone, an alkyl or aralkyl sulphonic acid and formaldehyde with an aluminium salt rendered partially basic and partially masked with an organic acid and water is evaporated from the mixture, said aluminium salt being added in such an amount and the water evaporated to such an extent that the melt solidifies on cooling. Sulphates and chlorides of the alkali metals can be used in the salting out process, the aluminium salt being rendered partially basic by the alkali metal salts of organic acids. Organic acids specified include mono or polycarboxylic acids, e.g. formic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, crotonic acid, oxalic acid, succinic acid, lactic acid, maleic acid, glycollic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid or mixtures thereof. In the examples, a condensation product from naphthalene sulphonic acids, 4:41-dihydroxy-diphenyl sulphone and formaldehyde is salted out with sodium chloride solution and mixed with (1) sodium oxalate, sodium acetate and aluminium sulphate; (2) oxalic acid, citric acid, aluminium sulphate, glacial acetic acid, formic acid and sodium hydroxide; evaporation to dryness being effected in both examples. The products may be used as tanning or retanning agents (see Group VIII).
