Abstract
A nickel plating bath for electrodepositing ductile, low-stress nickel plate comprises an aqueous acidic solution of at least one nickel salt, e.g. nickel sulphate, fluoborate, sulphamate, chloride and/or bromide, in which is dissolved, e.g. 0.1 to 10 g/1, metasulphobenzoic acid. The bath may also contain one or more of formaldehyde e.g. 0.01 to 0.15 g/1; chloral e.g. 0.02 to 0.25 g/l as the hydrate; bromal; and the unsaturated compounds dimethyl fumarate, trimethyl aconitate, coumarin, 3-chlorocoumarin, allyl alcohol, butyne diol and sulphonic acids obtained by reacting sulphites with XC2H4 (OC2H4)n OCH2 -C C-CH2O (C2H4O)n C2 -H4X (where X is Cl or B and n is 0 or 1); or the unsaturated compounds CH2 = C-CH2 OC3H6SO3H, HOC2H4OCH2 -CC-CH2OC2H4OH and HOCH2 -CC-CH2OC3H6SO3H. Wetting agents such as sodium octyl or lauryl sulphate, octyl sulphonic acid or Na-2-ethylhexyl sulphate, and buffers such as boric, acetic, succinic, citric acid may be added to the bath.
