Abstract

1467894 Cathodic protection assembly SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 1 April 1974 [3 April 1973] 14292/74 Heading C7E A metal wall or structural element 14 is cathodically protected by a removable elongated anode carrier provided with an anode 1 at one end, the carrier lying partly within a passage in wall 14 and partly within the bore of a valve 20, said bore and passage being aligned, and said valve being adapted to close said passage when the carrier is removed, there being means to retain the carrier in its operative position but also permitting retraction thereof for removal at the inner side of the wall. As shown, anode 1 is of Nb coated with Pt, 2 is epoxy resin filler, and current is supplied to the anode by conductors 13, 12, 6 and 3. The anode carrier comprises conductor 6, epoxy resin filler 5 and guide casing 4; restrictions 7 in casing 4 cooperate with hinged clamps 8 and 9 to position the carrier; a keyway and co-acting key prevent rotation thereof. Stainless steel scraper 17 assists withdrawal of the carrier; the arrangement between numerals 19 and 26 holds the retracted carrier while valve 20 is closed. A plurality of restrictions 7 make the distance anode to wall 14 variable; the anode may be streamlined to reduce its resistance to liquid flowing past it, e.g. when wall 14 is part of a ship's hull; the anode may be Zn, Mg, or for impressed current protection, Ti, Ta or Nb coated with Pt.
