Abstract
1467573 Axial Flow screw compressors DUNHAM-BUSH Inc 9 June 1975 [19 July 1974] 24657/75 Heading F1F A two part, inner cylindrical housing is concentrically carried within a sealed outer enclosure 10 and forms with the outer enclosure 10, a first sealed chamber and within itself an upper chamber carrying the stator 52 and rotor 56 of an electric motor and a lower chamber carrying two meshing screws 76, 126 lubricating oil from a gear-pump 92 is entrained with the compressed gas and passes, with the compressed gas, upwards from a chamber 70 through axial ducts within the motor rotor 56 to cool the motor, impinges on an end-plate 48 passes downwards through a second set of axial ducts which are between the stator 52 and the inner surface of the wall 38 of the upper chamber, to further cool the motor and is finally discharged into the first sealed chamber via passages in the wall 38. During this flow, the oil separates from the compressed gas and drains into a sump area 94 in the bottom of the outer enclosure 10. The passages in the wall 38 maybe either inclined to the radial direction or terminate in elbow ducts so that the compressed working fluid and entrained oil are discharged targentially around the first chamber. The lubricating oil is discharged from the gearpump into two chambers 100, 110 to act on axial thrust counter balancing pistons 104, 108 before entering lubricating passages 84, 144, 146 and 120, 140 and 142. Working fluid is admitted via an inlet duct 130, and exhausted via a check-valve 32 into an outlet duct 34. The inside of enclosure 10 may be lined with soft sheet metal to muffle sound.
