The pilot flame 5 is thus extinguished allowing a bimetallic element 6 to cool and close the valve supplying the main burner. The pilot valve has a spring-loaded plunger 15 connected by a leaf-spring 14 to a diaphragm 13 communicating through a capillary tube 7 with a mercury-filled bulb 8. A block of cast iron or mild steel may be used for the sink 9.
