Abstract

1464762 Pumps and turbines WEIR PUMPS Ltd 19 March 1975 [9 April 1974 24 Sept 1974] 15563/74 and 41472/74 Headings F1C and FIT A rotodynamic fluid-flow machine which may act as a pump or a turbine comprises a shaft mounted rotor 10 bearing helical vanes 18 below energy conversion means comprising a frustoconical portion 42 and a stationary portion 54, the former comprising inner and outer shrouds 46, 44, the rotor including a hub 20 and an inner shroud 24 supporting vanes 18 which with the outer shroud define fluid passages in which liquid forms a vortex with a free liquid surface on its radially inner boundary. An outer shroud 26 may be stationary or may rotate with vanes 18. Portion 42 may rotate freely or may be driven at a slower speed than rotor 10, and may bear guide vanes 75, also the outer shroud 44 may be fixed. The shaft 22 is supported at its ends in bearings 30, 34. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the lower bearing is replaced by a bearing above the hub.
