Abstract

1461864 Boring earth &c DRESSER INDUSTRIES INC 29 Aug 1974 [3 Oct 1973] 37781/74 Heading E1F In earth boring apparatus of the type in which the drilling mechanism moves along at least one guide column 11, the column 11 is hinged to a base 13 and the column 11 and base 13 are provided with mutually contacting curved surfaces 16, 17 respectively. As described two columns 11 (only one shown) are pivoted on hinge pins 14 on brackets 29 fixed to the base 13, the columns 11 being held in position by brace 20. The drilling mechanism, including rotary drill head 27, motor 28 and gearing 31, is mounted on a carriage 26 which can be moved up and down columns 11 by piston and cylinders 24, the cylinders 24 being fixed to the carriage 26 and the piston rods 25 being fixed to a frame 23 on the columns 11. The apparatusis particularly suitable for raise drilling operations in which a pilot hole is first drilled and the pilot hole is then enlarged by raising a reamer bit (not shown) along the pilot hole. During the reaming operation the reaction thrust force is transmitted from the columns 11 to the base 13 via the surfaces 16, 17, thus permitting the use of relatively small hinge pins 14.
