[Also in Divisions B4 and E1] An apparatus for sinking a shaft comprises a set of drills 10 fixed to a veritcal column 8 by means of link mechanisms 28, 29, enabling the drills to be fixed in relation to each other and in accordance with the required location of the holes. The drills 10 which may be percussion or rotary-percussion, are each carried by a link mechanism 28, 29, pivoted on a bar 30, the positioning of each drill being effected by a pneumatic cylinder 33. The bar 30 is attached to the extensible column 8 which can be attached to a carriage 17, Fig. 6 (not shown), by means of a roller 21 on a pivoted link engaging in a guide 19 on the carriage; the column may be extended by hydraulic, pneumatic or screw means. The carriage is provided with rollers 17a which run on a track 5 fixed in the Bhaft, the carriage being moved around the track 5 fixed in the shaft, the carriage being moved around the track via an arm 11 which is connected to a frame 1 pivoted at 6 on the track; the frame is driven by means of a drive 3, 4. In order to locate the carriage 17 in position for drilling a pair of pneumaticallyactuated plungers are provided on the arm 11 and adapted to be alternately engaged with holes located around the shaft. A driver's cab 7 is provided on the apparatus; alternatively, the apparatus may be controlled from the bottom of the shaft.
