Abstract
1422923 Boring earth etc J H BESIJN 30 Jan 1974 [1 Feb 1973] 04400/74 Heading E1F A rack for drill pipe comprises a horizontal frame 65, 66, 44 supported in a derrick by beams 61, 64, axially slidable racking arms 68 mounted on the frame and having pipe spacer plates 69 forming cells for pipe 40 and drive means 49 sliding the arms in steps so that a cell on one arm is opened or closed by movement of an adjacent arm. The member 44 is extended to form a fixed racking arm 67. When commencing pulling of drill pipe the movable arms are retracted into the frame. A pipe 40 is placed in the cell 55 in the arm 67 and is retained therein by advancing the adjacent movable arm one step. After all the cells of the fixed arm house pipe and are retained by the adjacent movable arm, the process is repeated using the next sliding arm and so on until all the pipe is racked. The arms are stabilized by the plates engaging slideways on the adjacent movable arms. The lower ends of the pipe rests in patterned indentations on the deck of a drilling vessel.
