Abstract

1461476 Drying acrylamide polymers SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 5 July 1974 [10 July 1973] 29869/74 Heading C3P Acrylamide polymers are dried by mixing the wet polymer with a thiourea compound in an amount of at least 0À01 wt. per cent based on the weight of dry polymer, and thereafter drying the polymer in the presence of said compound. Polymers which may be treated are polyacrylamide, acrylamide / acrylonitrile copolymer, acrylamide / methacrylamide copolymer, acrylamide / styrene copolymer, acrylamide/ acrylic acid salt copolymers, acrylamide/ammonium acrylate copolymer, acrylamide/vinyl sulphonate copolymers, acrylamide/itaconate copolymers, cationically modified polyacrylamides, acrylamide/dialkylaminoethyl acrylate copolymers, and acrylamide/vinyl pyridine copolymer. The thiourea compound may be thiourea itself, or a substituted thiourea such as trimethyl-, triethyl-, tetramethyl- or tetraethylthiourea. In the examples, the drying is effected by heating at atmospheric pressure.
