Abstract

1457503 Spray carburetters BRITISH LEYLAND UK Ltd 14 Dec 1973 [1 Dec 1972] 55672/72 Heading F1H At small throttle openings fuel supply from the fuel jet 14 into the region 4 between the choke 16 and the throttle valve 1 is prevented and fuel is supplied to the region downstream of the valve through an orifice 8. A chamber 7 downstream of the needle-controlled fuel jet 14 communicates with the region upstream of the choke through an orifice 11 and with the orifice 8 through a passage 10 formed in the carburetter body or a thin walled tube surrounded by ambient air. Due to the sonic or near sonic velocity at the orifice 8 at small throttle openings the fuel/air ratio of the mixture delivered by the orifice remains substantially constant with changes in ambient temperature as the result of changes in the degree of evaporation of fuel in the passage 10. The seal (26), Fig. 2 (not shown), carried by the choke piston (25) may be flexible so that the chamber (27) downstream of the fuel orifice (24) is sealed from the choke over a portion of the lift of the choke piston. A valve (17) is arranged to admit air to the region 4 when the valve 1 is minimally open. The valve 17 may be operated by the accelerator pedal to close when the pedal is initially moved to open the valve 1. Lost-motion may be provided in the pedal linkage to the valve 1. The valve 17 may be operated by a solenoid energized by a switch operated by the pedal or by a diaphragm against the bias of a spring and subject to the intake manifold depression when the valve 1 is minimally open. The valve 17 may co-operate with two seats so that air is admitted under idling vacuum but not admitted at overrunning. The carburetter may be of the type described in Specification 1278292 and may have an over-running valve associated with the valve 1 as in Specification 1146772.
