Abstract

1457080 Container traffic; securing containers WHARTON SHIPPING CORP 6 Nov 1974 [8 Nov 1973 2 Oct 1974] 48093/74 Heading B8Q [Also in Division B7] A vessel 10, for transporting a series of floatable containers such as barges or lighters 16 comprises a hull 11 with rigid support portions 14 and having a perforated bottom 12. The hull has bow 22, stern 21 and sidewalls 17 providing a series of buoyancy chambers 18 and hold 32. Water is introduced and expelled to or from the buoyancy chambers to adjust the draft, trim and list of the vessel. Gate 23 can be opened to load containers with winches 35 and closed during transportation of them. Piston/cylinder devices 50 releasably lock each container in place on the supporting portions and when loaded the containers are partially supported in the vessel by their own buoyancy and the containers are secured to the vessel in such a way as to enable transfer to the vessel of a significant part of the buoyancy of the containers.
