Abstract

The containers are of the buoyant type and are stored in the ship which has a compartment for each container. The ship also has loading doors in the side of the hull. If a container has to be unloaded or exchange, the required compartment is flooded. The ship is then trimmed by means of ballast pumps. The container can then be floated to the loading compartment which has a side door into the ship. A hydraulic lift enables the container to be hoisted or lowered to another deck. Both doors may be used for loading and unloading simultaneously.
