Abstract

822,135. Cargo vessels. FRIEDE & GOLDMAN Inc. Feb. 4, 1958, No. 3576/58. Class 113. In a general cargo ship having a hull with at least a portion of the interior thereof subdivided by one or more longitudinal bulkheads 14, 15 in addition to conventional transverse bulkheads to form a plurality of holds 22 disposed both athwartship as well as fore and aft, each hold has a hatch 17 substantially equal in area to the horizontal cross sectional area of the hold, which latter area is substantially constant throughout the depth of the hold. Each hold, is associated with a crane 19 or 20 for raising or lowering cargo directly out of or into any part of the hold. Intermediate decks 24 have hatch covers 25, hinged at 26 to open upwardly, which, in the lowered position act as a floor for cargo to be stowed thereon. Portable beams 27 are removably mounted in the between-decks 24 for accommodating the hinged covers 25. The ship has outer and inner hulls 11, 12 which provide tanks 13 for ballast or cargo.
