Abstract
1456656 Halide diffusion coating with rare earth metals OFFICE NATIONAL D'ETUDES ET DE RECHERCHES AEROSPATIALES 22 Oct 1973 [23 Oct 1972] 49137/73 Headings C7A C7D and C7F A substrate containing more than 50% of one of Fe, Co, Ni, Mo or W has a protective coating containing Al and an intermediate layer containing a rare earth metal or an alloy thereof, e.g. mischmetal which is applied by halide diffusion. The intermediate coating may be an alloy of rare earth metal, Fe, Co, Ni, Mo or Cr. The Al coating may also be applied by halide diffusion and it may contain Cr. The substrate may be first coated with Ni and Ti. An alloy which is 35 Yt - 45 Ni - 20 Cr is formed by mixing Yt and Ni with ammonium chloride and calcined alumina, and heated at 1050 to 1100‹C in hydrogen. After cooling, Cr and ammonium chloride are added, the mixture heated, and cooled to give an alloy - calcined alumina mixture. Examples are also described for making La-Co-Cr; La-Yt-Ce-Fe-Ni; mischmetal-Ni-Cr. The alumina may be replaced by magnesia which may be removed with citric or tartaric acids.
