Abstract

1510321 Hard facing metallic substrates UNION CARBIDE CORP 20 May 1975 [21 May 1974] 21405/75 Headings C7D and C7F In hard facing a metal substrate e.g. iron, steel, Co, Ni, Al, Cu, Mg and their alloys, the substrate surface is heated to its melting point in contact with a finely divided composition comprising (a) # 10% VC and/or V 2 C (b) W in solid solution in VC/V 2 C from 10% to saturation (c) 0-50% Ni and or Co and/or Fe. At least 80% of the composition is VC and/or V 2 C with W in solid solution and not more than 20% of the composition is dissolved in the substrate. The composition also contains 0-5% uncombined C and/or WC and/or W and/or V and may also contain C and 3C 2 . The composition preferably is in the form of sintered granules packed in a metal tube and applied by an oxyacetylene torch.
