Abstract

1530776 Bearings UNITED TECHNOLOGIES CORP 15 Feb 1977 [17 Feb 1976] 06191/77 Heading F2A [Also in Division B3] A bearing member comprises a crystalline substrate with a resolidified surface layer which is amorphous or has grains one dimension of which is less than 1000 Š, the layer being of thickness from 2À54 Á to 1270 Á, and an epitaxial layer between the substrate and the surface layer, the substrate being at least four times the surface layer in thickness. Preferably a surface area to be treated is a eutectic mixture, e.g. of Pd-Cu-Si, and is melted by passage of 3kw continuous CO2 laser beam, giving a melt depth of 76 Á to 100 Á average. In another example, a eutectic mixture of Ni-B was treated. The cooling rate (by conduction into the substrate) in excess of 5000‹ C./sec will produce an amorphous or fine grain surface layer of increased hardness and corrosion resistance. In other examples, C, B, P, or mixtures thereof are alloyed with Ni, Fe, Co, or mixtures thereof. Another composition used is 15% Co, 15% Cr, 5% Mo, 4% B, remainder Ni.
