Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture a dependable Pb alloy sheet by applying laser beams to both sides of a sheet manufactured by a DM method (Direct Method at Casting Lead Sheet) to melt and solidify surface layers in a short time, thereby reducing the grain size.
CONSTITUTION: Pb or Pb alloy sheet 1 manufactured by the DM method is fed between shaping rolls 7 to carry out levelling for the unevenness due to casting, and transferred to the next surface treatment station 8, where laser beams 10 from beam sources 9 are suitably reduced in beam size and applied to the surfaces of sheet 1. While moving the sheet 1 in the longitudinal direction, the beams are scanned in the lateral direction of sheet 1 at a relatively high speed to melt sheet 1 up to an appropriate depth from the surfaces. Since the beams are applied only to restricted regions for a short time, sheet 1 is melted and solidified in a short time. The cooling rate is high, so that solidified structure has a remarkably raduced grain size.
