Abstract

1404865 Zone melting NISSAN MOTOR CO LTD 20 Dec 1972 [29 Dec 1971] 58738/72 Heading BIS [Also in Division C7] A hardened layer is formed on Fe-based castings, e.g. grey cast iron, nodular cast iron, malleable iron, alloy steel and high-carbon steel, by locally melting regions of the surface by an electron beam, which melted regions are then chilled by the adjacent unmelted regions. The casting 14 is placed on a movable cart 12 in an evacuated chamber 10 and is acted upon by the beam 22 focussed by electromagnetic coils 26, 26'. The beam 22 can be focused to give a narrow, deep melted region or a broad thin region. The cart 12 is moved within chamber 10 to form hardened regions of the desired pattern on the surface of the casting.
