Abstract
1456402 Sorption pumps PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 3 Jan 1974 [29 Jan 1973] 00303/74 Heading F1N In a sorption pump comprising a sorbent filled reservoir 1 having an inlet duct 3 for connection at 4 to a space to be evacuated, a valve or valves is/are provided for exposing gas in the evacuable space successively to at least two different regions of the sorbent. The valve shown comprises a diaphragm 11 movable from a first position (left) in which it closes the annular space 14 between the duct 3 and a tube 5 extending into the sorbent and a second position (right) in which it opens the annular space 14. In the first position gas can only flow into the reservoirs through openings 13, the tube 5 and openings 6 whereas in the second position flow also takes place through the annular space 14. The diaphragm 11 has a sleeve 12 which slides in or on the tube 5 and a body 8 connected by a rod 9 to a control member 10. After evacuation the body 8 is held against a seat 8a to isolate the pump from the evacuated space. In a modification, Fig. 1b (not shown) a valve-member (16) fixed to the body 8 obturates the tube 5 when the annular space 14 is open. In further embodiments, Figs. 4a, 4b and 5 (not shown) the valve is constituted by the tube 5, the latter being axially slidable or rotatable in the duct 3. In an alternative construction Figs. 6-8 (not shown), conduits each leading to a different region of the sorbent are branched from the inlet duct 3, the conduits being each or together controlled by a valve. In order to utilize the sorbent more fully the depth of penetration of one of the conduits may be made adjustable.
