Abstract

1456015 Welding by pressure ALCAN RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 1 Nov 1973 [9 Nov 1972] 51891/72 Heading B3R In lap joining aluminium or aluminium alloy sheet, strip or extruded members, at least one of which is coated on one or both surfaces with an organic coating such as a polymeric material or an inorganic coating such as an anodic oxide film, bare areas of the members are overlapped on an anvil, a strip of explosive is secured to a coating on one of the members remote from the anvil without an intervening air gap, and the charge is detonated. In an embodiment two aluminium strips 1, 1<SP>1</SP> are each coated on both surfaces and the coating on one surface of each is removed near an edge to leave exposed areas which are then overlapped on an anvil 6. A length of cord-like explosive 7 united with a strip 8 of flexible material e.g. rubber having a pressure sensitive adhesive on one face is adhered to the coated surface of the uppermost strip 1<SP>1</SP> and then detonated to join the strips. A thin strip of self-adhesive PVC or polyethylene tape may be provided between the strip 1 and the anvil 6 and aluminium foil may be provided on one or both surfaces of the rubber strip. Two sheets painted with acrylic paint on one side only were joined. A coated sheet may be similarly joined to a coated or uncoated extruded section; and a coated extruded section may also be joined to a coated or uncoated extruded section and coated sheet may be joined to extruded members to form a van body. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,046,655.
