Abstract

1275925 Reflex reflective sheets D SWAROVSKI 11 July 1969 [12 July 1968 9 May 1969] 35060/69 Heading B2E A reflex film is obtained by adhering a layer of approximately spherical transparent bodies to the surface of a transparent deformable web and deforming the web to conform to the surface of the bodies to form a spacer layer of substantially uniform thickness, applying a reflective coating on the surface of the web remote from the bodies and applying a cover layer to the surface bearing the bodies. In a preferred embodiment of the invention shown in the Figure a smooth transparent web of cellulose ester film 11 is coated with twocomponent polyurethane adhesive lacquer 12 and a layer of glass balls 13 is applied thereto. The web is then heated into the thermo-elastic condition and deformed to conform to the surface of the balls to form a spacer layer which runs substantially concentrically around the back of the balls. This may be effected by application of pressure or a vacuum. The foil is then coated on the surface carrying the balls with a two-component polyurethane lacquer to form a cover layer 14. A weatherresistant protective layer 15 may now be applied which may also be a two-component polyurethane lacquer. An aluminium mirror 16 may then be applied to the reverse side of the spacer layer by a vacuum deposition. The mirror coated back may now be further coated with a solvent-containing adhesive to form a layer 17 of a polyisobutylene, polyvinyl ether, or polyacrylic acid esters. The material may then be laminated with a silicone-coated paper 18.
