Abstract

1455891 Carbon-coated porous membranes DUCOMMUN Inc 22 Jan 1974 [22 Jan 1973] 03029/74 Heading C1A [Also in Division H1] A method of forming a thin, porous member comprises suspending a porous carbon or ceramic substrate in an inert atmosphere, heating said substrate to between 950‹ and 1350‹ C., and exposing said substrate to a carbonaceous gas while maintaining the pressure at between 1 and 50 torr, thereby depositing on the substrate a uniform coating of optically active anisotropic, pyrolytic carbon. Preferably, the substrate is a membrane composed of carbon fibres, and the resultant coated membrane, which may have an average pore size greater than 60 Á and a weight between 30 and 140 gm. per 24 by 24 inch membrane, and whose electrical resistivity is not more than 0À02 ohm cm., may be used in a fuel cell electrode. The membrane may be cleaned and etched with hydrogen prior to the deposition of pyrolytic carbon. A porous membrane infiltrated with optically active, anisotropic, pyrolytic carbon is also claimed per se.
