Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture a microporous metallic body having a cellular structure and high strength by packing the pores of a porous metallic body having a cellular structure holding open cells with particles of a thermally decomposable org. substance coated with metallic films and heating the packed body.
CONSTITUTION: The surface of particles of a thermally decomposable org. substance are coated with metallic films, and the pores of a porous metallic body having a cellular structure holding open cells are packed with the coated particles. The packed body is then heated to remove the particles by thermal decomposition. The coating is carried out by depositing metal on the surfaces of the particles by electroless plating, coating the surfaces with a slurry of fine metallic powder, or depositing metal by electroplating after applying an electrically conductive coating such as a carbon coating. The particles coated with the metallic film are mixed with an aqueous soln. contg. a binder to prepare a slurry, and the slurry is rubbed into the pores of the porous body to pack the pores.
