Abstract

1454492 Fire protection means DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 12 July 1973 [14 April 1972 30 May 1972] 17231/72 and 25235/72 Heading A5A Fire protection means contiguous with and external to a tank for inflammable fluid, eg an aircraft fuel tank, is in the form of balls supporting a fire-fighting or fire-inhibiting material. The term "balls" means substantially spherical items which may be hollow balls, spheroids or sachets. The balls may have an external coating of natural rubber or intumescent paint which is swollen, respectively, by leaking fuel or temperature rise. According to another feature, the balls may be destructible by fire, fuel, or mechanical means and contain a fire-extinguishant. For example they may be made of a synthetic plastic or rubber and contain a gas, e.g. CO 2 , N 2 , (B.T.M. bromotrifluoromethane), or B.C.F. (bromodichlorofluoromethane): or a powder, eg potassium cryolite, potassium or sodium bicarbonate, or ammonium phosphate, plus a silica dispersant: or a foaming liquid. In a further feature the balls may comprise reticulated plastics material impregnated with intumescent paint. Particular embodiments include the following:-(i) polypropylene balls filled with pressurised N 2 and coated with natural rubber. (ii) polyethylene balls filled with pressurised B.T.M. and coated with an intumescent paint. (iii) reticulated polyurethane ether foam balls coated with intumescent paint. (iv) sachets of a coextrusion of polyvinylidene chloride and polyethylene filled with pressurised B.T.M. The balls or sachets can be used to fill the space between an aircraft fuel tank and its surrounding structure.
