Abstract

A fire-resistant container for holding combustible substances, particularly to a petrol tank for a motor vehicle has fire extinguishing material arranged in the region of the walls of the container to be released by mechanical or thermal action in case of an accident. The container may be in the form of a double-walled construction, with one container wall being kept to retain its shape by ribs, stringers or spacers at a distance from the other container wall. The space between the container walls is filled with fire-extinguishing material, and is so formed that circulation of the fire-extinguishing material between the two walls of the container is possible. Hollow spaces accommodating the fire-extinguishing material between the container walls may be pressurized spaces, and the fire-extinguishing material may be placed therein under pressure. The fire-extinguishing material may be arranged to be released towards the interior of the tank and hinder disc charge of fuel at the rupture point. <IMAGE>
