1454493 Fire protection means DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 17 July 1973 [30 May 1972 (2) 23 Oct 1972 18 April 1973] 25237/72 48621/72 18855/73 and 25234/72 Heading A5A Fire protection means adjacent a flammable substance or container there for. particularly adjacent a fuel tank in an aircraft, comprises an encased and sealed reticulated structure (defined) containing an extinguishant. The extinguishant may be a gas, liquid or powder and may be under pressure; specified extinguishants are CO 2 . N 2 , bromotrifluoromethane (BTM), bromomethane, bromodichlorofluoromethane (BCF), or potassium cryolite, potassium or sodium bicarbonate or ammonium phosphate optionally containing hydrophobic silica as flow additive. The means may be embodied in one of several forms:-(1) a reticulated metal, plastics foam, or metal-coated plastics foam, or a metal or plastics honeycomb structure, the metal being encased in synthetic rubber, the plastics foam in plastics sheet-material and the other, more rigid, structures in a metal skin. The honeycomb walling may be perforate or imperforate, e.g. perforated metal foil may have an aluminium alloy skin and contain pressurised BTM, or imperforate glass fibre-reinforced plastic may have a glass fibre-reinforced plastic skin and contain a powder extinguishant. (2) an elastomeric bag pressurised with a non-combustible gas and containing a resilient reticulated foam pad, the faces of which are secured to the inner surface of the bag. The bag may be of a low permeability plastic and the foam pad polyurethane ester or ether. A powder extinguishant may also be included. (3) a ball of resilient reticulated foam having an elastomeric skin and containing a non-combustible gas and, optionally, a powder. (4) a compartmented bag containing a fire-protection material, or (5) a bag containing balls or sachets containing the extinguishant.
