[57] ABSTRACT A quickly burning saucer containing a fire extinguishing powder sealed therein by a cover and in combination with cross arms centrally fastened together by a screw that also functions to securely attach the saucer and arms to structure over highly flammable areas such as gas tanks and engines of automobiles, deep fat fryers of restaurants, etc.
1 Claim, 2 Drawing Figures PATENTEUJAH is 1915 FIGURE 7 FIGURE 2 FIRE EXTINGUISHER The invention relates generally to fire extinguishing equipment, and more particularly to fire extinguishers for installation over flammable material, said extinguisher being cooperatively attached and supported for actuation by fire.
Heretofore individual fire extinguishers have been spaced apart around an area for use of fire fighters who must be present to operate them. Automatic fire fighting apparatus has been built into the protected structure and is rather extensive, such as sprinkler systems, suspended ceilings containing fire extinguishing material, etc.
It is an object of the invention to provide a small economical but highly effective fire extinguisher that can be individually installed above flammable materials and that will fire destruct to release fire extinguishing powder without the need for human intervention.
Other objects and a fuller understanding of the invention may be had by referring to the following specification, claims and figures, in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the invention installed under the hood ofa motor car, and
FIG. 2 is a bottom view of the invention.
Referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, the invention comprises a small suacer shaped dish made of a very fire destructive substance such as polystyrene foam that almost instantly disappears when touched by flame. The dish 10 is filled with any well known fire extinguishing powder 11 and held therein by a cover 12. Cross arms 14, shaped to conform to the bottom 16 of the dish 10, are arranged as shown in FIG. 2. A screw 18 fastens the arms 14 together at their intersection and also fastens them to the dish on its center axis, and further secures the dish and its contents in place on structure above the flammable material.
A fire extinguishing powder having a composition as described in my original application, that is having a composition in the ratio of 30 lbs. of ammonium sulfate, 18 lbs. of sodium carbonate, 2 lbs. of ammonium phosphate, 4 lbs. of red ochre, and 46 lbs. of silex or powdered silica, is prefered.
The arms 14 are preferably made of flat strips of material of a width and gauge to support the dish 10 and powder 11 and to distribute the supporting force of the screw head over a substantially greater area of the bottom 16 than the area of said screw head.
In use any fire instantly consumes the dish 10 to release the fire extinguishing powder 11 and smother the fire.
What is claimed is:
1. An improved fire extinguisher, for attaching over and adjacent to fire hazards, comprising: square container means, having bottom and sides and a cover, for holding maximum fire extinguishing material in the form of a powder for a size thereof, said container means being formed of polystyrene foam which is highly combustible and is fully consumed by a flame; a pair of cross-arm means shaped to conform to said bottom and sides of said container means, each said crossarm being arranged to bisect an opposite pair of sides and intersect the other said cross-arm normal thereto and in the center of said bottom and exterior thereto for strengthening said container means and thereby requiring a thinner container wall, and a small-headed screw having a length to extend through said cross-arm intersection, the square container means and its contents and into an attaching surface, said cross-arms being adapted to cooperate with said screw head to distribute the weight of said container means and its contents and to prevent said screw head from pulling through the bottom of said container means while substantially supporting said container means against distortion.
