Description

UNIT D STATES FFICEo ATENT FIRE-EXTINGUISH ING COMPOUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 62 5,293, dated May 16, 1899. Application filed May 25, 1898. Serial No. 681,722. (No specimens.)
To (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES I. DOUTNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Burlington, in the county of Ohittenden, State of Vermont, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fire-Extinguishers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact specification of the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, practical, and efiicient extinguisher for extinguishing fires and to compound same of ingredients which will be entirely harmless to human beings.
In carrying my inventioninto effect I take of bicarbonate of soda three parts, by weight,
and of fullers earth one part and mix the two together with snffieient yellow and red ocher to give the resulting compound a light brickred color. My fire-extinguisher when thus compounded may be packed in suitable metallic or other vessels of convenient form for storage, shipping, and general use, and for this purpose I have found that cylinders constructed of tin or similar material are very convenient, and these cylinders may be provided with a hook by which they may be suspended upon the walls of a'dwclling-house, factory, or office-building, in exposed audaccessible places, so that when a fire occurs the extinguishers will be at hand and ready for instant use.
In using my improved fire-extinguisher all that is necessary to be done is to remove the top from the canister or other receptacle in which it is stored and throw the extinguisher upon the fire. The action of the fire upon the compound results in its decomposition and 'the bicarbonate of soda from caking, so that my fire-extinguisher will always be in condition for immediate use and will at all times retain its powdered form.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A fire-extinguisher consisting of bicarbonate of soda and fullers earth, substantially in the proportions specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES I. DOUTNEY.
