Abstract

1,180,316. Flexible, hydrophilic polyurethane foam. ELEKAL. 18 April, 1968 [19 April, 1967], No. 18464/68. Headings C3C and C3R. A flexible and hydrophilic polyurethane foam consists essentially of a polyurethane based on a polyether or polyester polyol, has an open-cell structure and contains 5 to 35% by weight, based on the polyol, of microcrystalline cellulose in the form of fine particles homogeneously distributed in the pores of the polyurethane. It is suitably prepared by reacting in one-shot a polyether or polyester polyol at ambient temperature with an organic polyisocyanate in the presence of water, a fatty acid salt of divalent tin, a tertiary amine, a surface active agent and the microcrystalline cellulose. It is preferred to mix the microcrystalline cellulose with the polyol to form a binary mixture which has the tin compound, tertiary amine and surface active agent added to it before or while causing the reaction with water and the polyisocyanate. Preferably the microcrystalline cellulose has a particle size of between 0À1 and 100 microns.
