PROJECTILE APPARATUS FOR FLYING OBJECTS Filed April 20, 1965 INVENTORf %gbwl W k -m 2a Z a5 t I WW ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,291,047 PROJECTILE APPARATUS FOR FLYING OBJECTS Giichi Kitajima, 24-8 S-chome Asakusabashi, Taito-ku, Tokyo, Japan, and Hide Shidara, 638 Shimofujisawa, Musashi-machi, Irumagun, Saitama-ken, Japan Filed Apr. 20, 1965, Ser. No. 449,459 4 Claims. (Cl. 102--34.1)
The present invention relates to a projectile apparatus for flying objects available for a wide range of uses for signaling, propagation, ornamentation, amusement, education, experimentation and so forth, and it is the principal object of the present invention, to provide such apparatus that particularly can be used without any danger and produce a sufficient flight effect with a very small amount of gunpowder or explosive, and to strikingly reduce its manufacturing cost.
With these and other objects in view, which will become apparent in the following detailed description, the present invention will be clearly understood in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a longitudinal side section of the essential parts of the present apparatus;
FIGURE 2 is a longitudinal side section of another embodiment adapted to effect secondary or tertial functions on the apparatus shown in FIG. 1; and
FIGURE 3 is a top plan view of the apparatus, as shown in FIG. 2.
Referring now to the drawing, the subject matter of the present invention will be explained hereinafter. The projectile apparatus for flying objects, in accordance with the present invention, comprises fundamentally a partition 3 provided within a cylindrical body 2 at the midway thereof, the cylindrical body 2 is supported, with a suitable space 11 therebelow by a cylindrical supporter 1, which has gradually enlarged sections towards its lower open end, a plug 4 is applied at the bottom end of the cylindrical body 2, and an explosive 6 such as black granule gunpowder is received in an air-tight chamber 5 formed between the partition 3 and the plug 4, in such manner that the explosive 6 can be ignited from the outside through a fuse 7. If it is desired to effect secondary or tertial functions on the present apparatus, suitable throw-away goods 15 (FIG. 2) and a necessary charge of gunpowder 14 are received in an upper chamber 8 formed above the partition 3, through which an internal fuse 12 is provided within the cylindrical body 2. In order to use the apparatus especially for signaling and so forth, firecrackers or roaring materials are placed directly upon the charged powder 14, and suitable throwaway goods 15 such as parachutes, tapes or the like are received in the upper chamber 8. And, in order to use the apparatus for education or for experimentation, a secondary jet rocket body may be set upon the charged powder 14. Further, in order to use the apparatus for setting off firecrackers or the like, such firecrackers are provided directly upon the charged powder 14. Furthermore, in order to use the apparatus for amusement or for propagation, suitable formative goods may be merely fixed on the cylindrical body 2 fitted with the fundamental apparatus of the present invention.
In order to operate the fundamental apparatus in the projectile apparatus for flying objects, the cylindrical body 2 may be arranged upright on the ground and the external fuse 7 may be ignited from the outside with a match or the like. The ignited fuse 7 instantaneously causes ignition of the explosive 6 received in the airtight chamber 5 within the cylindrical body 2, and due to the expansible force of the explosive 6, the sealed air in the air-tight chamber 5 is ready to escape outside and presses hard on the plug 4 downwardly. Consequently,
Patented Dec. 13, 1966 the plug 4 is hurled against the ground or floor 10 through the space 11 and becomes disjoined from the cylindrical body 2. At this time, a strong impact is applied on the lower chamber 9 including the space 11, and this gives reaction to the cylindrical body 2, and a further stronger impact applied on the upper partition 3 produces an uprising force to fly the cylindrical body 2 together with the cylindrical supporter 1. Hence, when suitably shaped formative goods or advertising goods together with written announcements thereon are fixed on the cylindrical body 2, such goods will soar in the sky, as a matter of course.
In the apparatus devised so as to effect secondary or tertial functions, the internal fuse 12 passing through the partition 3 within the cylindrical body 2 is ignited during the flight of the projectile apparatus, firecrackers or roaring materials give out strong sounds, while the cylindrical body 2 ascends, flashing materials glitter, coloring materials exhibit their specific colors, or then throw-away goods such as parachutes, tapes or the like are discharged and scattered, or firecrackers such as fireworks and the like are ejected high in the sky, and also a secondary jet rocket body may be similarily ejected. These devices may be optionally made as occasion demands.
The construction of the present apparatus generally consists of three portions, i.e., a lower body defining a chamber 9, an air-tight body defining a chamber 5 and an upper body defining a chamber 8. The cylindrical body 2 is connected directly with a supporter 1, and both members 1 and 2 together with a cap 13 are made of a light material such as polyethylene. A partition 3 is made of gypsum or the like material, and a plug 4 is made of a heavy material, such as cement or bakelite. In a thus constituted air-tight chamber 5 is received a suitable amount of an explosive 6 such as black granule gunpowder having a high expansion coefficient, in such manner that an empty space is always left in the airtight chamber 5 above the enclosed explosive 6, The lower periphery of the cylindrical body 2 includes a lower chamber 9 which is perfectly divided from the outside by the supporter 1, and this lower chamber 9 is of much use in assisting the flight of the projectile apparatus. In this case, for the purpose of providing the desired space 11 between the plug 4 and the floor 10, it is necessary that the supporter 1 is of a predetermined length just as a skirt, so as to floatingly support the cylindrical body 2 received therein.
In conventional apparatus of this kind, there has not been provided with a supporter, such as provided in the present invention, and as a bottom end plug together with a fuse passing therethrough is directly placed on a base floor to project its main body, it happens to incur a tremendous danger in handling such apparatus. The present apparatus of the invention improves particularly on this point.
While we have disclosed several embodiments of the present invention, it is to be understood that these embodiments are given by example only and not in a limiting sense, the scope of the present invention being determined by the objects and the claims.
What we claim is:
1. A projectile apparatus for flying objects comprising a cylindrical hollow body,
a partition wall disposed within said cylindrical body intermediate its ends, and
