Abstract

1453316 Nitrogen oxide reduction EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 10 Dec 1973 [27 Dec 1972] 57067/73 Heading B1E [Also in Division Cl] A catalyst active for the selective reduction of nitrogen oxides and which comprises at least one non-noble transition metal oxide-containing active material on a porous refractory carrier comprising an alumina base and a coating of a second refractory oxide on said base is used in a process in which the quantity of nitrogen oxides in a gas stream containing oxygen is reduced by (a) adding at least 5 mole of ammonia per mole of nitrogen oxides and-(b) contacting the gas mixture in a reaction zone at at least 500‹F with said solid catalyst. The coating is preferably silica, titania, zirconia, ceria and/or thoria and the catalyst material is preferably an oxide of Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, V, Cr, Mo and/or W. In the Examples, a two stage reduction is effected using copper oxide on alumina in the first state and iron oxide on titaniacoated alumina in the second stage.
