Abstract
1423196 Treating exhaust gases UOP INC 19 April 1973 18919/73 Heading B1F A catalytic converter for treating I.C. engine exhaust gases comprises a catalyst compartment 5 containing a singular bed of a singular catalyst material, the compartment comprising upstream and downstream sections 20, 21 air being introduced to the downstream section of the compartment in a direction generally transverse to the direction of flow of the exhaust gases through the catalyst compartment. The air is introduced via one or more tubes 15 with transverse apertures 16. The engine is operated to maintain the untreated exhaust gases low in oxygen and high in carbon monoxide and the catalyst acts to produce reduction of nitrogen oxides in the upstream section 20 and oxidation of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons in the downstream section 21. The catalyst may be copper oxide or copper oxide promoted with other metal oxide, e.g. iron, cobalt, chromium, magnesium, cerium, vanadium and nickel oxides and supported on an alumina carrier material. The catalyst may be contained in an annular compartment (55), Fig. 3 (not shown), between perforate partitions (60), (61). Air is supplied to the catalyst bed via tubes (65).
