Abstract
1453153 Incineration of explosive waste HERCULES Inc 26 Nov 1974 [27 Nov 1973] 51144/74 Heading F4B A process for the incineration of solid or liquid waste propellants and explosives in which, in the case of solids, the waste is fed into a hopper 10 and is moved through a metal detection and removal device 18 before being ground in the presence of water in the grinder 20 so that particles have an average maximum dimension less than 0À25 inch. In the case of liquid propellants or explosives an absorbent material such as sawdust is used to absorb the wastes and produce particles of less than 0À25 inch. Particles from either of the processes are washed into a mixer 22 where water is added to form an aqueous suspension which is pumped into the inlet end 30 of a rotary kiln 32. The temperature in the chamber 38 is maintained by a burner 44 at from 1200‹ to 2200‹ F., and the aqueous suspension is fed in at a rate so that water is evaporated as it contacts the hot kiln surface and this is followed by combustion of the suspension solids in the presence of air supplied from the line 36. Exhaust kiln gases may pass to a second incinerator 46 for further combustion, and are then drawn by the fan 60 through a precooler 54 and a wet scrubber 58 before exhausting to atmosphere.
